Despite the many issues Cyberpunk 2077 has seen (and fixed!) since its launch, CD Projekt has said that it is “totally, fully committed” to developing the Cyberpunk IP further.
Michał Nowakowski, CD Projekt’s vice president of business development, confirmed the company’s commitment to the Cyberpunk IP during the CD Projekt Group H1 2022 earnings call, saying that the foundation the studio built for this particular universe is not simply going to be thrown away.
“We decided to develop one major expansion for Cyberpunk, which is going to take advantage of all the capabilities of the new-gen consoles,” Nowakowski said. “Having said that, we’re totally, fully committed to developing the Cyberpunk IP further, beyond this particular Cyberpunk expansion.”
“We’ve put a lot of effort and time into building this franchise and we definitely want to continue to build upon what was built right now – with new stories, new experiences, new content, basically. Not just the video game format… In terms of expansions, there’s just going to be one major expansion. However, there’s going to be new stuff in the future.”
This follows CD Projekt’s big Cyberpunk stream, which revealed a bit about the future of Cyberpunk 207. Before that Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime is set to arrive on Netflix.
While Nowakowski doesn’t specifically say so, it feels likely that his comments refer to more Cyberpunk media outside of Cyberpunk 2077 itself – whether that’s new games (newly-acquired studio The Molasses Flood is developing a game based on a CD Projekt property), new TV shows, or otherwise.
Alongside announcing that Phantom Liberty will be Cyberpunk 2077’s first and only planned expansion, CD Projekt also announced that it released an official modding tool called REDmod that should add even more life to the game. While that was good news, Cyberpunk players on last-gen consoles found out they won’t be able to play the expansion and that development on PS4 and Xbox One has ended.
As for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, the anime will be released on September 13 and follows a young street kid who dreams of becoming a mercenary outlaw known as an edgerunner. To get fans ready for the series, CD Projekt released an update that puts players in the shoes of David Martinez, the protagonist of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.
